Letter to a Best Friend

A letter to a best friend is an extremely informal letter, written in the most casual of contexts and with only the most genuine and friendly of undertones. A letter written to a best friend is perhaps the most perfect example of an informal letter. Letters written to one’s best friend have to contain lots of references to personal matters, to social gatherings, to family and other friends, as well as to other peripheral things such as academics, exams, deadlines etc.

  • Since this letter is such an informal letter, be sure to use a lot of interjections (exclamation marks). Go down your memory lane and use anecdotes.
  • Informal letters will always contain a lot of references that a third person or a stranger might not understand. Especially in the case of one best friend writing to another best friend, the references used while writing might be utterly incomprehensible to a stranger. Conversely enough, in the case of a formal letter, one can easily understand what the situation is or what the problem being addressed is. This is one of the principal differences between an official letter and an unofficial letter.

Hi!

It’s been so long, hasn’t it? I think it’s been about four weeks! Things have been crazy around here! I’m not such a fan of the rehearsals, but you remember what Ash said, don’t you? In fact, I was hanging out with his girlfriend Joan the other day, and I must say, she’s simply amazing. She made me understand Ash’s ideology like it was nothing. I must say, now I agree quite a bit with the way Ash functions.

I met your uncle the other day. We had a coffee and talked about his performance at the NCPA. Another friend of his happened to drop by—an actress who had once worked with him. They had a very professional yet casual conversation. I quite enjoyed listening to the two of them talk. And then, when they got around to talking about Austen, I contributed actively to the conversation. You can imagine that, can’t you? You so can. I just know it!

I’m missing the food there. Here, the coffee is utterly undrinkable. The sandwiches are better, but I’d give anything to trade one of them in for a falafel from the café across our street.

The academics are crazy around here. Did you know, Yale conducts three exchange programs around here? I participated in one of those last month. Boy, was it exhausting! We had to write like three papers per week and I was so tired at the end of it all! I learnt a lot, though, but it was still tiring as hell.

Enough about me, though. You have to write back soon. I’m waiting!

Dear Sandra,

How are you doing? I am very fine here and you will be surprised to know that I have got a job offer from a well known soft ware company in United States. All these days I was busy in the visa and ticket formalities and so couldn’t meet you. I will be flying tonight as I have already received the appointment letter and need to go on priority basis.

Sorry for not meeting you and thus I ‘m writing to you. I will miss the best times we spent together on the wada pav center and the times on the sea face we spent laughing and sharing all our memories. I will never find a friend like you and you will be one of my best friends for ever. I will keep in touch with you and try meeting you online when possible.

Lots of love.

Yours loving,

Suzan.
