A reference letter for higher studies is written to recommend a student for admission to a college to pursue higher studies such as MBA, M. Tech, and others. It is not uncommon for students applying to colleges for higher studies to include recommendation letters in their applications. The letter is usually written by a person of authority from the institution where the student is or was a former student. This could be a professor, mentor or even the dean of the college.

The letter contains all the details of the student regarding his/her past study life. This includes the academic prowess of the student in question, along with details about extracurricular activities that he/she may have been involved in during their college years.  A reference letter is nothing but a simple request to the head of the institution to get the recommended person admitted, and as such should encapsulate the various desirable traits and qualities that would make the student a good fit for the institution.
